I was in a room of well-established business coaches who were getting their heads around social media. It was a great opportunity for me to ask questions about their lead gens and sales challenges. As I listened, I realised that business owners want to hear the promise of success. Who doesn’t, right.
We all want to rely on experts and have clarity and certainty in their work. I’m no exception. However this desperate desire to be guaranteed results opens us up to an opportunity many marketers exploit – they promise you what you want to be promised.
The truth is that NO ONE can promise you ANYTHING especially before working with you. There is no other profession but marketing where people give absolute guarantees. Marketing isn’t any more precise or special in order to give out promises like this.
Of course this is not the ‘evil marketing’ fault but desperate and opportunistic people who are making money off the entrepreneurs’ fear of uncertainty. We want guarantees; and they are giving them to us.
This is not a fear inducing rant. And I’m not interested in dividing us into bad and good people camps. I want to draw your attention to something really important.
It saddens me to see so many women in business choose to work with those who convey empty promises. I don’t need to tell you how many people end up being disappointed. Enough is enough! If you choose to rely on unrealistic expectations you must take some responsibility for the consequences. This is extremely too common to ignore!
Very often women in business don’t know who to trust. This is true for many other areas. You are not alone. I don’t have a magic portion solution for you (because trust takes time) but I know that empty promises and guarantees are very often a lie. If you are unsure what will work for your business; and someone guarantees amazing results in a short period of time, this is not where you should be putting your trust in.
Do your due diligence, ask more questions and take time to research, connect with experts online and watch them, understand and align and don’t settle for a quick fix or a promise.
