I believe that we have an underlying problem that is stunting a lot of impactful work in the world. I am talking about conversations. The lack of, to be precise.
I think that many problems in the world, from personal development to international policies, remain unresolved or challenging to navigate due to the epidemic inability to successfully converse with one another.
Most of us, of course, can talk, read and listen, physiologically speaking; however it appears to be almost impossibly difficult to speak and listen once we are in a group setting and engaging with one another. We are all navigating different groups in our lives, from families to nations – groups matter to us. However, deciding on the national budget, tampon tax or climate change is proving to be a lot more complex. Albeit we can talk, read and listen, we cannot agree on basic ideas and concepts like human and animal rights, international relationships and even what to have for lunch today.
Apart from not always being able to easily decide on your lunch, sometimes emotions add some fire to the difficulty. Some conversations are simply too confronting, uncomfortable, rude, insensitive…. you name it!… to start unpacking at all, which enables secrecy and worsening of the covered up issues.
I think that emotions are really useful – they can ignite and direct. Many honest conversations can invoke emotions – they are signals telling us that something is important. While emotions can make a conversation more challenging, I find them very useful.
I believe that there are enough courageous people in the world to open many important cans of worms – conversations we must be discussing today to invoke any change tomorrow.
In my business, I practice honest conversations by telling appropriate prospects that social media marketing isn’t a suitable solution for their problem and by helping well-fitted organisations realistically improve their results. Sometimes these conversations are confronting but they are always worth it because they create real change.
I am passionate about more honesty in marketing and in business.
I think the world is crying out for more effective and honest solutions.
I think that most conversations can be improved with better intent and language. This doesn’t seem to be always obvious or even available, especially in the heated moments of a firy discussion. However, with more tools and practice, I believe, we can make a good progress impacting all areas of our lives.
In my personal search for deeper human connections and better conversations, I launched my Changing Conversations project with our first event taking place in Sydney on 28 September 2019.
The aim of my project is to design a supportive space where more difficult conversations can be brought to light. In September, we talked about animal rights in Australia and how people navigate this issue in their personal lives.
I’ve noticed that attempting to talk about animal rights can feel overwhelming – this isn’t usually a dinner table conversation. How do you bring the issue up in a way that sparks a change in attitude and behaviour? With the help of a good friend, a fellow animal lover and Voiceless Education Program Coordinator Hanna Lucas, we set out to empower others to speak up on these issues and effectively use their power to help discuss animal rights challenges.
Our conversation is applicable to any other areas of life, from choosing the right social media strategy for your mission to the national election, feminism, religion, poverty and to self-development. There are myriads of other areas of our every day living that deserve a spotlight, uncovering creative solutions and personal healing.
The most fruitful and natural exercise for our minds is, in my opinion, conversations. – Michele de Montaigne
I believe that intent and language play huge roles in our every day interactions, both business and personal lives. Language is often shaped by our intention and we can skew the intention with language. Seeing conversations as opportunities to learn more about others, to express yourself, to educate and inspire can set a fruitful intent allowing for welcoming and encouraging language.
Everyone can lead an impactful conversation. We all need more time and practice expressing ourselves better, inspiring others and asking questions. These skills can help us with bigger issues like climate change, space travel, immigration, terrorism, poverty, to name a few. But we are unable to effectively solve these problems without being able to come together and converse.
Life is an unfoldment, and the further we travel the more truth we can comprehend. To understand the things that are at our door is the best preparation for understanding those that lie beyond. Reserve your right to think, for even to think wrongly is better than not to think at all. -Hypatia
I think it takes time, courage and practice to deepen human connections and better our conversations. I feel very honoured to be working with people who are courageous and vulnerable and who are speaking up, taking chances and changing the world.
